Chapter 36: Draq
I heard the stairs creaking and I tried not to groan. I don’t know how long Dru and I had been down here; I just knew that I had completely lost touch with my dragon. Tianlong had used the last of his power to heal me. Now he was resting deep within me; although in my weaken state there was no chance of him healing anytime soon. My entire body ached from the beatings the wolves had given to me, and being chained with 24 Karat gold chains wrapped around my neck, arms, and legs. I had no chance of escaping.
“Dru,” I called out to my brother, trying to see if he was conscious yet. He had taken a terrible beating a few days ago, and hadn’t spoken since. I knew from our twin bond that he was still alive, but the bond was growing weaker by the minute. I had to do something to get us out of here. I knew if we didn’t get out before tonight, Dru would be dead.
The lights turned on in the cellars, causing me to repeatedly blink my eyes as I tried to focus my vision. I had a plan to break free, and prayed to the Goddess that it would work. While I didn’t have the strength of my dragon, I was still a natural born fighter and a descendant of the first dragon shifter, all of his descendants had been blessed with a magical gift. Since Dru and I were twins we were blessed with two different gifts, the first gift we shared, the ability to see bits and pieces of the future and our second gifts while they went hand and hand with each other they were also polar opposites. Dru’s gift was a miracle while mine was a curse. Dru was blessed with the affinity of restoring life. I was cursed with the affinity of taking life. Dru has only used his gift on one occasion.
When we left the horde, Dru and I stumbled upon a nearby human village. The village had been ransacked, dead bodies and blood covered the streets. This village was one of the many that the werewolves had attacked to increase their profits in the slave trade. We walked through the village disbelief and horror in our eyes at how little the wolves cared for another’s life. So many lives needlessly taken without a hint of remorse. We were about halfway through the village when we heard the sounds of
a muffled cry. We searched every nook and cranny in the village searching for the source of that little cry. We searched for hours, the more hours that past the quieter the cry got. We knew that if we didn’t find the little one before the end of the night that yet another life would be lost in this village. Just as the crying stopped a white glowing orb appeared before us. We followed the light and discovered a small house that had been badly burned. Only a small structure of the home still stood. Dru and I followed the orb into the home and began searching frantically underneath all the wreckage for the baby, The baby turned out to be a little girl and she was cradling her family in her arms, whimpering, trying to get them to respond to her.
“Mama, Papa, Anya.” The little girl called, shaking each one of her family members. The mother laid under a pile of rubble an small infant cradled to her bosom, the father looked like he had been holding the little girl when the house came down on them. It was by some miracle that the little girl had survived. Watching her cry over her family made Dru distraught. It looked like he was losing control of his dragon, as his eyes started to glow, his aura swirling around him. I quickly grabbed the girl, hauling her outside, trying to shield her from my brother’s dragon. Except Dru didn’t shift. Instead a bright light burst from his body, cocooning the entire village. I watched in amazement as the entire village came to life. There was no sign that this place had once been the sight of a bloody massacre.
Dru walked out of the family home looking weakened and drained, whatever he’d done must have taken a toll on him. We would need to leave this village quickly and find somewhere safe for him to recover, I set the little girl down gently, kissing the top of her head and telling her that this was all a bad dream, and that when she awoke in the morning everything would be the same. The little girl smiled back at me as she slowly walked into her family home, locking the door behind her.
I grabbed ahold of my brother who was now stumbling around in the streets and placed him on my back, before running towards the fields and shifting into my dragon form. Tianlong flew for miles taking us as far away from our family home as his wings would allow, until he stopped just outside the borders of the
Vampire Kings territory. Tianlong quickly shifted back, allowing me control of my body again, the long flight had taken its toll on my dragon and he needed to rest and recover. Dru was finally looking more like his normal self as we wandered into the forest, coming to a nearby cave that looked like a good place to rest.
Settled in the cave I looked a Dru trying to decide if he was going to tell me what the hell had just happened or if I would have to ask. He stayed quiet, starring down at his hands a faraway look in his eyes.
“So what was that?” I asked my brother interrupting his thoughts.
“I’m not sure.” Dru replied. My body absorbed the orb and then the orb spoke to me, telling me I needed to use my gift to save this girl’s family. She; the orb, told me that the girl was destined for greatness, that she was the key to changing the kingdom. However if we left her here an orphan, then the girl wouldn’t come into her powers. The orb told me it was the upmost importance that I restore the village to the way it was before hand. The moment I agreed to trying, my body was surrounded by a bright white light and I watched in amazement as the girl’s family came back to life as their home restored itself magically. The next thing I knew I was surrounded by darkness and then I was waking up to the sight of your dragon descending towards the forest floor.”
“There was definitely something special about that little girl, I could sense her power radiating off of her body.” I replied back. Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
Dru looked like he wanted to say more, but there was a loud explosion at the opening of the cave. We could feel the walls quiver and quickly ran out of the cave and into a trap. We were surrounded by at least a hundred human hunters and they thirsted for the blood of any magical creature. I closed my eyes and summoned the power within me, hoping that like our seer ability, Dru and I shared the gift of life; but instead of a white holy light bursting from my chest, tendrils of black smoke circled around some of the hunters bodies. The tendrils wrapped tightly around the human hunters neck, squeezing tighter and
tighter with each passing second. I tried to gain control of my power and call back my magic but it had developed a mind of its own. One by one the hunters nearest us dropped like flies. One of the hunters figured out that I was the source of this unknown power and ended up shooting me in the neck with a trang gun. When I awaken again it is in the royal palace and Dru is watching over me.
That was the last time and only time I used my divine gift. Taking someone’s life took a great toll on me, I wasn’t a god or goddess, I shouldn’t get to decide who lives and who dies. Today however, I would call on my gift again and kill whoever was approaching us, and then I would threaten the guards into letting me out and freeing my brother.
I held my breath and continued to ten letting the power build up inside of me,
“Dru, Draq. Boys, I am here to take you home.” Came the voice of my favorite person in the entire castle, Matilda Jean. She was a Faerie and also the royal messenger.
I locked my power up tightly before opening my eyes, I tried calling out to her, grimacing at how hoarse my voice sounded.
“Alpha Ash, I demand you release these boys now.” Matilda said growling at the Alpha Wolf.
“Of course.” Ash responded gritting his teeth.
I watched in horror as Dru was dragged out of his cell, his entire body was covered in cuts and bruises, his breathing was shallow. Matilda waved her hands over Dru, casting a spell on him that would expel the venomous gold from his body and his healing to increase. She also healed the majority of his wounds, causing me to let out a sigh of relief, my brother would be okay. We were alive and we would live to see another day.
