The sound of approaching footsteps shook Selene from her daze, and she quickly stooped to gather the scattered remnants of the tray that had fallen from her hands in her daze.

As the office doors swung open above her, she hid quickly, or else she would have found herself face–to–face with her father. He would think she was eavesdropping.

Coldly, Selene averted her gaze as she left the scene, making sure she was not seen, her heart pounding in her chest.

She didn’t dare linger. She did not want to be caught eavesdropping. Her father would it well. She dashed out of his office building.

It wasn’t until she was safely ensconced in the backseat of her sports car that Selene finally allowed the anger that brewed deep in her chest to burst free.

She screamed into the vacuum of the car a bit before calming down.

Anya again. Why hasn’t she died yet? She knew she was the better option to be Daniel’s wife and wished Anya would vanish somewhere. She was jittery from what she heard.

By the time the car pulled up to the opulent family estate, Selene had managed to compose herself, dabbing at her eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief.

She couldn’t let her mother see her in such a state; it would only raise more questions than she was prepared to answer.

With a deep, steadying breath, she walked into the family’s lavish sitting room, trying as much as possible to not seem like she had been crying. But her red eyes slightly betrayed her.

“Mother,” she greeted the impeccably dressed woman with a polite nod. “We have to talk right now. It is extremely urgent.”

Her mother raised a puzzled brow but gestured for Selene to proceed..

Selene tried to keep her fury in as she relayed the details of what she had heard.

She did not need to explain more for her mother to catch the implications of her words.

“Daniel is…faking his marriage with the girl?” she said, “What is happening? I knew it. I said there was no way he would like her. It seems he is just in a contract relationship. They are really not married.”

The more her mother talked, the more her excitement seemed to grow.

The reaction was instantaneous and explosive. Her daughter was so close, yet he liked that random girl? What was wrong with her daughter that Daniel would not even glance her way?

Selene’s mother’s face relaxed.

“But with the statement he made last time, doesn’t he want to embarrass us?” She asked, “We have made plans on our side that you will be his wife. Now he is keeping that girl by his side; who knows when she will seduce him?”

Her mother’s perfectly arched brows almost came together in an ugly scowl, her lips pursing into a thin, disapproving line.

The older woman could already imagine the shine that would come if Daniel did not marry her daughter. Isn’t it better to give up before they get shamed again? Her excitement deemed and her brain cleared.

“Impossible!” her mother said through her teeth. “I had already told you to back off and had taken my mind off it. I thought you would never have the chance. After all, if he obviously liked you

and pushed forward with the deal with our family. Why would he embarrass you? Where did you hear that he is in a contract marriage with his wife?”

“He is not married to her! He is still single! I heard dad say it in his office. It is a contract, but that bitch is parading as his wife,” Selene basically screeched.

“So what? Did Daniel Shaw promise you anything?” A person spoke, and they all turned to the young

man on the staircase. It was Selene’s older cousin, Leo. He was her fans successor and had grown up with her.

“What nonsense are you sprouting? This was agreed upon by both families!” Selene’s mother, Martha, scolded the boy she saw as a son.

“Do you think you are trying to force some random heir to marry your daughter? This is Daniel Shaw. If you and your father are not careful, Daniel Shaw will crush both of you in anger. I don’t know what gave you the confidence to decide his marriage without asking,” Leo scoffed.

“I am sure it is nothing. Men do this all the time. Besides, you sister can possibly be liked by him, right?” Martha soothed her daughter after throwing Leo a glare. She said it because she saw her daughter sway as though she would fain

“There is no need to glare at me. When Daniel Shaw ignores your daughter and she becomes the joke of the country, you can glare at the world,” Leo sneered at them.

Selene flinched at the venom in his tone, her heart sinking further. Was it just her dreams, or was it just her wishful thinking?

“Calm yourself, Selene,” her mother sighed, though her own voice trembled with barely

restrained fury. “Clearly, that…girl, Anya, has led Daniel astray. A mere daughter of an escort, with designs on a man like Daniel Shaw. Can she deal with the pressure of being his wife?”

The disdain in her mother’s words was clear; her disdain for a woman she had never met was

deeper than the oceans..

Even though Selene heard her mother’s words, her heart hurt even more with each passing moment. Why not her?

She had always known, on some level, that Daniel did not care about her and knew even more that her use in the family depended on who she married.

She had thought long and hard; she had waited for him for a long time. Even changed her face

for him.

She had heard her father talking with someone on the phone. It was Daniel’s only living grandfather, and he wanted Daniel to marry her. She did not even think to confirm if it was really old master Rhodes or a scammer. She had made up her mind.

To face the possibility of losing her dreams of becoming Daniel’s wife–it was almost too much to bear. Losing it to Anya was even more gut wrenching.

“I should meet Anya. We need to have a talk, face–to–face” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Are

you stupid? Do you want to anger Daniel Shaw?” Leo scolded

“Leave this to your father to handle; he will talk to Old Master Rhodes and push forward your wedding.” Martha tried to convince her to let it go.

Selene’s eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. “You want me to just ignore her and let her parade around as his wife?”

“You have a point,” her mother interjected, her tone brooking no argument. “You are obviously the one who will marry him. Why do you have to be afraid of his girlfriend? It’s like the wife being afraid of the mistress. But first, let me talk to your father.”

Leo looked at them as though they had gone mad. His mother was busy saying nonsense to pacify. Selene
