MISTAKE 107
Chapter 107: The government comes for Anya
Across the city, Daniel Shaw ended his call with Mathias, a satisfied smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He pocketed his phone and turned his attention to the imposing building before him, the Rachelle family’s private bank.
Taking a deep breath, Daniel straightened his tie and walked through the ornate doors. The interior was all polished marble and dark wood, exuding an air of old money and discretion.
A smartly dressed woman approached him, her professional smile not quite reaching her eyes. “Good evening, sir. How may I assist you?”
Daniel gave her his most charming smile. “Good evening. I’m here to access one of your safety deposit boxes.”
The woman nodded. “Of course, sir. May I see some identification?”
Daniel produced his ID and a set of documents. “I believe you’ll find everything in order.”
The woman examined the papers carefully, her eyebrows rising slightly as she read. “I see. Mr. Shaw, if you’ll follow me, please.”
She almost jumped out of her skin from reading his name. This was the actual Daniel Shaw?
She led him through a series of security checkpoints, each more stringent than the last. Finally, they arrived at a heavy vault door.
“Mr. Shaw, I’ll need to verify your biometrics before we proceed,” the woman said, gesturing to a sophisticated–looking scanner.

Daniel nodded, placing his hand on the device. After a moment, it beeped affirmatively.
sir. Right this way.
“Thank you, sir.
Inside the vault, rows of safety deposit boxes lined the walls. The woman led Daniel to one in particular.
“Here we are, Mr. Shaw. Box 1374. I’ll give you some privacy. Please ring the bell when you’re
finished.”
Daniel waited until she had left before inserting the key and opening the box. His heart raced with anticipation as he lifted the lid.
It was empty.
Daniel blinked, certain he must be seeing things wrong. He ran his hand along the interior of the box, as if its contents might be invisible. Nothing.
Frustrated, he rang the bell. The woman returned promptly.
“Is everything alright, Mr. Shaw?”
Daniel struggled to keep his voice level. “No, it’s not. The box is empty. There should be something inside.”
The woman’s professional demeanor faltered slightly. “I see. Let me check our records.”
She hurried away, returning moments later with a leather–bound ledger.
“Mr. Shen, according to our records, this box longs to tre Aye Show Are you aftores
Daniel nodded impatiently, “Yes, Anya is my wife She’s ther’s in a come I have power of attomey.” He produced another document from his pock
The woman examined it closely. “Everything seems to be in order, Mr. Shaw. However, I’m afraid I can’t explain why the box is empty. Our policy is not to monitor the contents of our
Daniel’s frustration was mounting “Look, this isimportant. My wife is the only one who should have been able to access this box. And as said, she’s been in a coma for weeks. So how is it empty?”
The woman looked uncomfortable. “I understand your concern, Mr. Shaw. Let me check the access logs.” She flipped through the ledger, her finger tracing down a column of dates and
Her eyes widened slightly. “Oh. It seems the box was accessed earlier today.”
“Accessed?” Daniel asked, “I thought only relatives could access it,” he said.
The woman nodded, clearly unsure of what to make of Daniel’s reaction. Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Daniel’s thoughts raced. Anya had no family but himself. But that was impossible. Anya’s parents had died years ago. It was one of the first things he knew about her.
So who had accessed the box? And more importantly, what had they taken?
Daniel felt his blood run cold. “By whom?”
The woman hesitated. “I’m not sure I should”
“By whom?” Daniel repeated, his voice hard.
They were not allowed to reveal such things, but this was Daniel Shaw. Could she say no?
She quickly excused herself and went over her desk looking for the answer the dicked through her computer till she found it.
The woman swallowed nervously. “According to our records, the box was accessed by Mes
Anya Shaw’s mother this afternoon.”
Daniel stared at her, his mind reeling. “Her mother?” he asked, confusion evident in his voice
She is really alive, then?
Justin Shaw strode out of the office building, his mind preoccupied with the day’s meetings. As he reached for his car keys, his phone buzzed in his pocket. Frowning, he pulled it out and glanced at the screen. The message he read made his blood run cold.
His eyes darted around the street, suddenly on high alert. That’s when he spotted Mercy approaching the building’s entrance. Without hesitation, Justin jumped into his car and drove to a stop in front of her.
Mercy stumbled back, startled. “Justin? What are you doing?”
“Get in,” Justin said urgently, leaning across to open the passenger door.
Mercy’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What? Why? I have a meeting

“Trust me,” Justin cut her off, his voice low and dark. “You don’t want to be in there right

Something in his tone must have made her pause, because Mercy suddenly felt that she should
enter the car.
She suddenly felt she could get a lot of information from Justin; at least she wanted to try. SoMercy hesitated only a moment before climbing into the passenger seat. Justin peeled away from the curb before she’d even closed the door.
“Justin, I hear that you are the boss‘ new favorite. Anything you wish to tell me?” Mercy asked.
“Shouldn’t I ask you? I am still an outsider in your organization,” Justin said, and he scoffed.
“You probably know more than I do; now I have been iced out,” Mercy said, glancing outside the window.
“Where are we going?” Mercy demanded as they merged into traffic.
He shook his head slightly, eyes fixed on the road ahead. “Not now.‘
“What do you mean, ‘not now‘?” she pressed. “You can’t just-”
“Shh,” Justin hissed, making a sharp turn onto a side street.
Mercy opened her mouth to argue further, then suddenly froze. Her eyes darted around the car’s interior, a dawning realization reflected in her expression.
She looked around the car. Was it bugged?

Wendy watched Anya in the hospital while Daniel was away. Jason again.
“Sir,” the man said. We’ve got a situation outside,”
Jason straightened, instantly alert. “What kind of situation?”

Jack swallowed hard. “Government agents, sir. They’ve surrounded the hospital.”
“Is that so?” Jason muttered. He turned to his mother. “Mom, stay here with Anya. Don’t open the door for anyone but me, understood?”
Wendy nodded. “Be careful, Jason.”
She was not stupid. Why would the government agents appear at such a time?
Jason strode out of the room, his men falling into step beside him. As they walked through the bullet–riddled corridors, Jason barked orders to his men, ensuring the perimeter remained
secure.
This hospital wing was detached from the actual hospital. This is why they chose this place. It was easier to protect.
When they reached the hospital ward entrance, Jason saw them: Agents Martha and Vincent, standing at the head of a group of stern–faced armed squads.
He recognized these two from the cruise ship, and his jaw tightened. This was not going to be pleasant.
and Jason stepped outside, his posture relaxed but alert. “Agents,” he called out, his voice carrying across the parking lot. “I’m afraid you’ve wasted a trip. We’re a bit busy at the moment,
