Chapter 284 Lying Beside Her
Freya never expected him to call her out of the blue. He had gone abroad twice, both times for business matters. He had never reached out to her before. His unexpected call today caught her off guard.
“You…”
“I heard from Linda that you’re sick.”
Freya held the phone tightly, her fingers trembling slightly. So, it was Linda who told him about her illness, and that was why Elijah decided to call her.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Wasn’t it because he missed her?
Freya lowered her gaze slowly and replied, “I’m fine, I just fainted because I was too tired.”
“Are you feeling better now?”
“Yes, I’m better. No need to worry.”
“Uh-huh.”
“…”
They remained silent for a while. During this time, neither of them spoke, yet neither of them hung up the phone. In the silence, they could hear each other’s faint breathing. Freya was the first to break the silence. “You must be busy, and I don’t have anything important to say, so I’ll hang up first.”
“Mm.” He acknowledged. But neither of them hung up. Freya didn’t hang up either. They fell into silence once again. This time, it was Elijah who spoke. “You can hang up now.”
Freya made a sound of agreement and hung up the phone. Setting her phone aside, she felt an unexpected calmness wash over her. In an instant, all the things she cared about, all the grievances in her heart, seemed to have been resolved. Putting her phone down, she lay down. Perhaps due to her profession, she didn’t mind the smell of disinfectant in the hospital. She was tired, and she closed her eyes heavily.
The night grew darker. Even though the hospital quieted down, occasionally, there would be footsteps echoing through the halls. Freya slept soundly, unaware that the door to her ward had been pushed open. A tall figure strode in. There seemed to be a moment of hesitation, then he gently closed the door and walked straight to the bedside. He looked at the woman sleeping on the bed, his eyebrows furrowing slightly.
How could she sleep so deeply and peacefully in the hospital?
He unbuttoned his suit jacket with one hand, then lay down on his side and embraced her from behind. Freya was in a daze, as if sensing someone’s presence, but she was too tired and quickly fell back asleep.
In the morning, Freya was awakened by Linda.
“Ma’am…”
Freya made a sound, slowly opening her eyes. Seeing Linda, she rubbed her eyes and asked, “What time is it?”
“It’s past eight, I brought you something to eat, I was afraid it would get cold.” Linda said.
Freya instantly felt wide awake. “Already past eight?”
“Yes,” Linda replied.
Freya quickly got up.
Linda said, “You need to rest, no need to get up so early.”
Freya hurriedly said, “I have to go to work today.”
“Just take the day off and rest, even if you go to work now, you’ll be late.” Linda said. She felt that Freya didn’t understand the importance of the situation. Comparing her health to work, her health was definitely more important.
Freya checked the time, it was already 8:40. She sat on the edge of the bed, well, she would take a day off. First, she greeted Sivin Peters, informing him that she would be taking the day off, then she had breakfast. After Linda left, she completed the discharge procedures. Even though she was a doctor at this hospital, she still had to go through the formalities when she checked in. She stayed in a VIP single room, probably arranged by Sivin Peters. Since she wasn’t going to work today, she called Zane to meet up.
Zane didn’t come home last night, spending the night with Luna. They had a night out at the bar. When Freya arrived, Luna was still slumped on the table. There were quite a few empty bottles on the table. It looked like they had been drinking a lot. Zane looked better, aside from his wrinkled clothes and the smell of alcohol, at least he seemed somewhat sober.
“Freya, you’re here,” he chuckled, but his throat was extremely dry.
Freya opened a bottle of mineral water for him. Zane chugged down half the bottle in one gulp, relieving the dryness caused by the alcohol. Freya looked at him and said, “I’m going to ask you something, and you need to answer me honestly.”
Zane laughed, “Why are you so serious?”
“Be serious, I’m not joking with you,” Freya said.
Zane adjusted his expression, “Go ahead, I’ll tell you the truth, I have nothing to hide from you.”
Freya looked at his rambling manner and couldn’t help but wonder if he was sober.
“I’m asking you, at Orion’s wedding yesterday, did you hang the long scroll outside the building?”
