Chapter 187 One Minute
Freya was still in a state of unconsciousness, bound to a cement pillar by Zane. There was a bomb strapped around her waist. That was how Elijah found Freya.
His expression immediately darkened.
Zane held the bomb controller in his hand, opening his phone and aiming it at Elijah. “Tell me, how did you kill my mother?”
Elijah replied, “I didn’t.”
“I don’t believe you. If you didn’t kill her, then why were you at the scene?” Zane sneered. “Just because I’m young, you think I’m easy to deceive?”
“Young?” Elijah scoffed at him. “Indeed, not mature.”
Zane was infuriated. “Whether I’m mature or not doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have to listen to me now.”
Elijah remained calm. “I can listen to you, but I have a question for you. Does my presence at the scene prove that I’m the one who killed her?”
“Of course,” Zane replied.
Elijah was frustrated by his flawed logic. “I received a message, which is why I went there. If you don’t believe me, you can check my phone.”
He handed over his phone.
Zane couldn’t free up his hand at the moment. His arm injury hadn’t fully healed. Holding the bomb detonator in one hand and the phone in the other, he didn’t believe Elijah. “You must be framing me.”
“Zane!” Freya suddenly woke up. She realized that he didn’t actually believe her words.
“Zane, please believe me. Neither Elijah nor I would harm your mother. If we truly wanted to kill her, we would have done it in prison. Why would we go through the trouble of getting her out of jail just to kill her?” Freya reasoned with him. Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
She believed that Zane must have been overwhelmed with grief and manipulated by someone. After all, it was his mother who had died. Zane couldn’t refute Freya’s words, but he shook his head forcefully.
“It was Elijah.” Said Zane.
Freya felt heartbroken. Why couldn’t he see reason?
But she had to persist. “Zane, it’s obvious that someone wants to make you the scapegoat. You’re being used. Don’t be foolish!”
Zane’s heart began to waver. Because he couldn’t argue against what Freya and Elijah were saying.
“Zane, I promise you, I will help you find out the truth about your mother’s death. I guarantee that whoever killed her will face the consequences of the law.”
She spoke with conviction.
Zane felt a bit unsettled now. When he found out about Yolanda Steele’s death, he was truly devastated. Then he received a video showing Elijah at the scene and a text claiming that Elijah had a motive to kill his mother. His suspicion and anger towards Elijah, combined with his resentment from their fight, had reached a boiling point, causing him to believe it. But now, in this moment of calm reflection, everything seemed to point to someone manipulating him.
Just as Freya had said, if they truly wanted to harm his mother, they could have done it in prison without going through the trouble of getting her out.
It didn’t make sense.
The purpose of getting his mother out of prison was to manipulate her control over him. He understood everything now, but he didn’t let go of his grip.
However, Zane’s demeanor grew even more resolute, and he spoke with a malicious edge, “I don’t believe it. You can’t brainwash me. I won’t fall for it. Freya, I know you and my mom don’t get along. I have a clear understanding of that. My mom has done you wrong, and I don’t believe you’ve just let it go. So, her death must be connected to you, and I will definitely seek revenge for my mom.”
He made a threatening motion, as if he was about to press the detonator switch in his hand.
Freya widened her eyes, but her shock wasn’t because Zane Stone was about to blow her up. It was because he had never trusted her all this time.
“Zane…”
“Don’t say anything. I don’t want to hear it!” Zane Stone interrupted her, his gaze shifting towards Elijah. “Do you love Freya?”
It seemed like an inappropriate question for the situation. Or perhaps, Freya didn’t expect him to ask that. Freya instinctively looked at Elijah, who was looking at her. Their eyes met in the air.
“Why aren’t you answering? Is it because you don’t love her? I guess so. A man like you, how can you settle for just one woman? You must have desired many women. And you and my sister… no, Freya, are together just because she gave birth to your child, right?”
Freya had never considered this question before, but when Zane Stone mentioned it, it seemed to hold some truth.
Was Elijah’s kindness towards her purely because he genuinely liked her? Or was it because of Kai’s existence that he treated her well?
Zane Stone’s words clearly had an impact on Freya. If Zane noticed it, how could Elijah, who was so intelligent, not have sensed it?
Elijah took a step towards Freya.
“Don’t come any closer, I have a bomb on me, it’s dangerous,” Freya said.
Elijah seemed to ignore her warning and continued walking until he stood in front of her.
Freya looked up, her eyes wide open, her curled eyelashes blinking with a faint shimmer, holding a thin layer of tears. She forced a smile and explained, “I believe that you do have feelings for me.”
“Freya, have you lost your mind? He hasn’t said anything yet, and you already believe him. It seems like you’re truly foolish!” Zane Stone’s tone was one of concern. “If he dares to die with you, that would prove that he loves you deeply, right?”
Freya looked at Zane. “What are you trying to do?”
“I’m just helping you test this man,” Zane looked at Elijah. “If Elijah doesn’t move even when I press the bomb, then I’ll believe he’s not the one who killed my mom, and I’ll also believe that he genuinely loves my sister.”
As he spoke, he had already pressed the bomb’s activation button.
The countdown timer on Freya started ticking as well, 60, 59, 58, 57…
They only had one minute.
Freya growled at Elijah, “Hurry, leave!”
She didn’t need Elijah to prove his feelings for her in this way. She only knew that if both she and Elijah died, their child would be left an orphan. With so many enemies after Elijah, would their child even survive?
The odds were clearly stacked against them. As long as Elijah was alive, he could protect their child. Elijah’s eyes were deep as he smiled at her.
Freya, “…”
Had this person gone crazy?
How could he still smile at a time like this?
“Think about our child, um…” she began, but before she could finish her sentence, Elijah leaned in and kissed her lips.
The bomb’s countdown timer continued to tick, 45, 44, 43…
“I know you must be scared all alone. I’ll be with you, and then you won’t be afraid,” Elijah whispered into her ear.
Freya’s heart pounded fiercely, beating twice as hard.
Her eyes widened involuntarily.
She trembled, her lips quivering, her voice hoarse. “We’re gonna die.”
“Freya, I’m glad I met you,” Elijah embraced her.
Freya’s throat tightened. It felt dry and itchy. She was scared, but with him by her side, it was as if someone was there to face death with her, making even death less terrifying. Freya could finally believe, at this moment, that Elijah loved her.
“I’m sorry,” she pressed her face against his chest. “I shouldn’t have doubted you.”
Elijah’s large palm covered her face, gently caressing her cheek and ear. His fingertips were full, warm, and delicate, as if they held a magical power that soothed Freya’s heart.
The bomb’s countdown reached 10, 9, 8, 7… 3, 2…
The last digit turned to 0. Freya closed her eyes, not struggling, not afraid, all because Elijah was by her side.
One second, two seconds, three seconds…
But there was no explosion.
What was going on?!!
