Chapter 95 More Complicated
“Shouldn’t you lock the door, Lewis?” Seth casually asked.
Only silence filled the air as Lewis stared at the former.
“You should worry about yourself,” he replied after a brief pause. Then, he turned to enter the car outside his house.
Seth chuckled faintly but still joined Lewis inside the vehicle.
As for Josephine, who hid behind the door, she waited until the car drove further away before cautiously coming out of the room. It was undoubted that Seth had traumatized her to the point where his face alone could scare her senseless.
Sometime later, Lewis and Seth returned to the Alvarez family’s residence. His sister and mother, Daphne and Nancy, sat anxiously in the living room. Once the two men arrived, Nancy rushed up to grab Lewis’ arm and greet him, “Lewis.”
A nod came from Lewis, who then asked, “Where’s Dad?”
“He’s in the study. Behave while you’re in there, okay? He’s still very much upset with you.’
Lewis hummed lightly, then strolled toward the study as though unbothered by the situation. He knocked, entered the room, and saw Robert standing before the window.
Robert’s back faced the former. He was over 60 years old and had a head full of white hair. Still, his body was in good shape. He stood with his back straight and chin high.
Lewis stood behind Robert and said, “Dad.”
Spinning on his heels, Robert examined Lewis, a stern look radiated from behind his spectacles. He then raised a stack of documents and slammed them onto the latter’s chest. ” Look at what you’ve done! Are you happy now?”
Loud whooshes sounded as paper scattered all over the floors.
Not once did Lewis flinch. Instead, he bent down to pick up one of the papers before looking at the words. “Seth is in charge of overseeing this project.”
At once, Robert snarled, “Seth says you signed the papers, but you’re telling me he’s in charge of the project? Are you two playing me for a fool? Who the hell should I hold accountable for this issue, then? Both of you have somehow run the company down to this wretched state! What’s the use of keeping you around?”
Lewis glanced at him, casually remarking, “I did sign the papers, but nothing seemed wrong with the project plan when I read its proposal. Thus, whatever problems that arose are likely due to operational issues.”
Upon hearing this, Robert was even more angry. He glowered at the door, lowered his voice, and said what he really wanted to say, “How dare you let Seth oversee such a massive project. alone? What were you thinking?”
In truth, he didn’t trust Seth, despite the latter having joined their family and company for these past two years. His distrust felt justified now that things had gone south. Their company had made several investments in other smaller companies, yet the results were fleeting. Those other companies had gone bankrupt, had severe existing problems, or their CEOs had fled with the money; each had troubles that negatively affected Alvarez Corp. It felt like too much. of a coincidence to Robert, so he naturally suspected Seth was trying to start an uprising.
“Apologies, Dad. It’s my fault and negligence. Seth joined the company for two years and did a decent job, so I never questioned things. I shouldn’t have trusted him.” Lewis lowered his gaze as though blaming himself.
Robert was already pissed off beyond reasoning, so he stomped toward the window and scoffed several times. After pacing around, he turned to meet Lewis’ eyes. “Well? What do we do now? Can we get the investment money back?”
“It depends on Seth.”
Scoffing, Robert thundered, “That son of a bitch, Seth! I bet he’s using this investment project to embezzle company resources. You need to get my money back from his filthy rat claws! Otherwise, should our company run out of capital, all of Alvarez Corp will be in deep shit. Do you understand?”
“Yes,” replied a nodding Lewis.
“Good. We can’t afford to confront or cut ties with Seth. You must gather evidence to prove that he misappropriated company funds. That way, we can force him to spit out all the money
he stole from us!”
“Understood.”
“Okay, you may leave now. Get Seth in here on your way out.” Robert waved dismissively.
With a nod, Lewis headed down to the living room, where Seth and Daphne were chatting.
The two shot to their feet when they saw Lewis coming downstairs. Daphne was the most nervous of the two. She worried that her family wanted to kick Seth out or imprison him. Her chest tightened with nervousness, not wanting her one true love to leave her. “How did it go, Lewis?”
“Seth.” Lewis ignored the former and said, “Dad wants to see you in his office.”
Daphne’s heart sank to her chest, and she quickly gripped Seth’s hand, asking, “Is something
the matter?”
She had heard about the failing investments and the company’s missing funds. It was because
she happened to overhear her father’s phone call earlier. Thus, she had been worried sick this entire time, terrified that Seth would be in trouble.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be right back, okay?” Seth soothed her, patting her hands before going upstairs.
“Lewis, please help put in a good word for Seth. He’s worked hard for the company these past two years and hasn’t made any mistakes; you know this!” Daphne rushed to her brother’s side, her eyes narrowing with desperation.
Yet, not a trace of emotion showed on Lewis’ face. “Don’t worry. He’s not in trouble for now.
“For now? What do you mean by that?”
“It means just that,” came Lewis’ carefree
response.
Daphne grew increasingly frustrated and wanted to question further, but Lewis had already brushed her off and left the building. Unable to get answers, she paced in circles while
incessantly asking Nancy for help.
That pushed Nancy to the brink of annoyance. Little did Daphne know that Nancy’s main concern was the safety of her son, Lewis, and not her daughter’s husband, Seth; Nancy couldn’t care less about what happened to outsiders like Seth.
Half an hour went by. That was when Seth rejoined the two downstairs with his usual expression, so no one could tell what had transpired inside the study.
Daphne approached him, her lips moving with urgency. “How did it go?”
“Daphne, I need to head out for a bit. I’ll tell you once I get home, okay?” Seth smiled while affectionately petting her head before heading out.
Coincidentally, the baby started crying, so Daphne had no choice but to turn and comfort her son. The issue with her father and husband would have to wait.
Once Seth set foot outside, his smile dropped. He walked into a discreet corner before taking out his phone and dialing a number. It wasn’t long before the call connected, and the person on the other end waited in silence for him to speak first. Seth asked, “That was fast. Did you transfer all those investments’ funds out of the companies already?”
The person gave a long pause, then replied with a question. “Would you believe me if I said I
didn’t do it?”
Seth’s gaze hardened at once. “What do you mean?”
–
“What I mean is the companies got into trouble before I started the process. I couldn’t get a single cent out of them.”
All color vanished from Seth’s face, and he could no longer maintain his confidence. “What? Are you sure you’re not lying to me?”
“What would I gain from lying to you? Although we’re not close, our goals are the same. We’re after the investment money, so we need each other for this to work.”
“I’m aware,” Seth’s low voice rang out again, “But I wasn’t talking about the money. What I meant was-if you didn’t take the money, then things are more complicated than I thought.”
“How so?”
“There’s only one other person who might’ve done it. It must be Lewis.”All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
