Josiah’s eyes flickered, turning toward Lysander as if seeking confirmation about Blaine’s words.
Rhizone, a man of few words, simply nodded in agreement. Then, with a palpable sense of guilt, he turned to Josiah and said, “Josiah, you entrusted Dr. Thorne to me. But I failed to protect her, and she ended up getting hurt.”
“It’s not your fault,” Lysander said hastily, trying to alleviate his burden. “My injury is minor. On the other hand, you’ve been exhausted all night since you haven’t gotten a wink of sleep. You’re truly a little hero. When you grow up, I’m certain you’ll be able to provide a good life for your family.
Upon hearing that, a spark lit up in Rhizone’s eyes.
Josiah gave a gentle smile. “Without you, neither Dr. Thorne nor I would have known the way. So, you really did us a huge favor.”
As he was speaking, he suddenly remembered that he hadn’t yet paid for his food and lodging at Nilou’s house the day before. Hence, he hastily reached for his wallet.
Lysander saw him trying to move around not long after his ankle had just healed. Swiftly, she grabbed his wallet for him and handed it over, saying, “You should rest for a few more days before doing anything strenuous. Just to be clear, if it needs to be reset, I really can’t handle it.”
“Dr. Thorne, you don’t need to worry about Josiah.” Lotus suggested earnestly. “My father is currently setting a lamb’s bone back in place in the village. Just a quick snap and all is well. If Josiah needs help, I can let him know and ask him to come over.” Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Blaine agreed, saying, “Indeed, this is a solution. Some of the local methods used by the villagers are quite effective.
Josiah quickly waved his hand. “There’s no need to bother your father with such a trivial matter. I just bumped myself a bit, I’m really fine now.”
He casually asked, “By the way, where are your parents? Is everyone in the village all right last night?”
“Everyone managed to avoid them in time, so no one encountered those people,” Nilou answered, unable to suppress a sigh. She spoke with a touch of melancholy. “My parents were fixing the boat with the other adults. Those people were so cruel, they even damaged the boat before they left.”
Upon hearing this, a subtle hint of displeasure appeared on Josiah’s face.
These people were far from just being cruel, they were pure evil. As for Dillon, who allowed them to run amok with their wicked deeds, he definitely couldn’t be let off easily.
After making up his mind, Josiah opened his wallet to hand over all the cash he had previously withdrawn from town and handed it to Niloy. “This is for the straw crafts I sold and for the meals and lodging at your place.
Both Nilou and Rhizone were taken aback. Despite their age, this was the first time the siblings had ever seen such a large sum of money.
“Josiah, we can’t accept so much.” Nilou was reluctant to take her eyes off the money, but she remembered her parents‘ teachings. She only took two notes and handed the rest back, saying. “This is enough, we don’t

Josiah gave a gentle nod, saying, “It’s all right, keep it. What remains is a token of gratitude for the assistance you and Rhizone have given us. Also, I want to thank Rhizone for taking care of Dr. Thorne last night.”
Nilou hesitated to accept it, instead turning to Lysander. “Dr. Thorne…”
Lysander knew that this amount of money was trivial to him, but it meant a great deal to Nilou and Rhizone. Hence, she persuaded them to accept it.
“Please, take it,” she said. “He’s injured and will need to stay here for a while to recover. Who knows, once he’s better, he might need to stay at your place and watch the fireflies. Consider these as an advanced deposit. Also, let’s take this opportunity to replace the broken boat at your place.”
A ship that had once been damaged was ultimately unsafe. It was better to replace it as soon as possible to avoid any potential mishaps.
No matter how clever and quick–witted Nilou was, she was still just a child. After hearing Lysander’s words, she didn’t persist any further. Instead, she sincerely thanked them. Seeing that Rhizone was still dazed, she instinctively pressed his head down and together they bowed in gratitude.
The adults present couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene, sharing knowing smiles amongst themselves.
Josiah asked once again, “Would you like to go to school outside? Not in town, but somewhere bigger, at place where you can really showcase your talents.”
In a daze, Rhizone turned to Lysander, barely understanding what was happening.
Nilou’s eyes sparkled, her gaze brightening noticeably. It was clear she wanted to go, but after a moment, she asked, “If my brother and I were to go to school outside, what will happen to Mom and Dad?”
“Of course, you can all go together.” Josiah was willing to financially support their family.
Upon hearing these words, Blaine grew immensely excited and urged, “Nilou, Rhizone, you must agree quickly. This is a wonderful opportunity! Mr. Guerra is offering to sponsor you!”
“Thank you, Josiah, thank you, Dr. Thorne.” Nilou, though young, was thoughtful. She first politely thanked Josiah, then bit her lip and said, “I know you’re trying to help, but we need to go back and discuss this with our parents first. Can we give you an answer later?”
“Of course, anytime you’re ready, feel free to come find me,” said Josiah, genuinely not wanting to see these two children’s talents go to waste.
After Blaine and his party had left, only Lysander and Josiah remained in the consultation room, exchanging glances.
