MISTAKE 82
Chapter 82: Found.
Michael’s name flashed on the screen. A mixture of anticipation and dread had filled Daniel as he answered, “Dad?”
For his father to call, he had thought something had happened to Anya, but hearing his father’s voice, Daniel calmed down.
He walked over to the car with Jerry and got in.
“Talk,” Daniel said.
“Daniel, it’s Dad,” came the familiar gravelly tone of Michael through the static. “I just got the phone with your grandfather.”

“What has the old man found out?” he asked wearily.
There was a pregnant pause before his father responded, his voice taking on a dangerous edge that immediately put Daniel on high alert.
“Daniel?” Michael’s gruff voice came through. When Daniel did not respond quickly, he wondered what was wrong. “Did you hear me?”
A wave of relief washed over Daniel. His father’s words didn’t carry any bad news about Anya. So he was relieved. “Yeah, I heard you. What’s going on?”
“We’ve got a lead, son. A big one. You grandfather still has his methods.” Michael said, his

voice lowering darkly. “We’ve found the leader. The Dark Hands. We know where they’re holed
up.”
Daniel sat up straighter, his free hand gripping the car seat. “Where?” he demanded, his voice barely above a whisper.
Michael rattled off an address in Angel City. Daniel committed it to memory, his mind already
racing with possibilities.
“There’s more,” his father continued. “We have reason to believe their boss is in the building.
This could be our chance to end this, once and for all.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched. The boss of the Dark Hands; the man responsible for Anya’s condition, for his late wife’s assassination. They could actually find him?
“Are you sure?” Daniel asked.
As sure as we can be in this game,” Michael replied. “What do you want to do, Daniel?”
Jerry slid into the driver’s seat beside Daniel, raising an eyebrow at his intense expression. Daniel held up a finger, signaling for silence.
“Dad, I need you to do something for me,” Daniel said, his mind whirling with a plan. “I need
a distraction.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line. “A distraction? What for?”
Daniel took a deep breath. “I’m going after Anya’s safe.”
“The safe?” Michael’s voice sharpened. “Daniel that’s incredibly risky. The Dark Hands will be watching it like hawks.”
“Exactly,” Daniel replied. “Which is why I need you to keep them occupied. Give them something else to worry about while I make my move.”

longer this time. “What’s in that safe, son? What’s so important that you want
Daniel closed his eyes, remembering the fear in Anya’s eyes the last time they’d discussed the safe’s contents. “I don’t know exactly. But whatever it is, the Dark Hands want it badly. And they’re willing to do anything to get it.‘
“And you think getting to it first will give us an advantage?”
“I think it might be our only chance to end this, Dad. I want to handle this before Anya wakes up and I bring her home.”
Michael sighed heavily. “Alright, Daniel. We’ll create the distraction you need. But how do you plan on getting into the safe? It’s got to be locked up tight.”
A small, grim smile played at the corners of Daniel’s mouth. “I’m Anya’s husband. That’s all the access I need.”
“Be careful, son,” Michael said, his voice softening. “Your grandfather and I, we’re putting- measures in place to protect Anya at the hospital. He thinks the Dark Hands might try to move on her while we’re distracted.”
”
Daniel’s grip on the phone tightened, his knuckles turning white. “They won’t get near her. Not again.”
“We’ll make sure of it,” Michael assured him. “Now, you said you had some information for us?”
Daniel nodded, even though his father couldn’t see him. He glanced at Jerry, who was already pulling out his laptop, “Yeah, we’ve managed to piece together quite a bit from the updated list. Maybe you can find someone to do our dirty work. Jerry’s sending it over now.”
As Jerry’s f
fingers flew over the keyboard, Daniel filled his father in on the details they’d uncovered; this was an updated list of who everyone the Dark Hands wanted dead. There was bound to be someone on that list that would know too much about them. It wasn’t everything, but it was more than they’d had in weeks.
“Good work, both of you,” Michael said, the pride evident in his voice. “We’ll put this to good use, Daniel… be careful. Your grandfather and I can hold the fort. But I heard that the bank is very strict and providing false verification can get someone killed.”
Daniel’s eyes darkened at this. He knew this too. This was a bank owned by the Danielle family. People have died in there. “I will handle it, Dad. I’ll call you when it’s done.”
He ended the call and turned to Jerry, who was watching him with concern. The weight of what they were about to do settled heavily on Daniel’s shoulders. But for Anya, he’d face any
danger.
“You are going to the bank?” Jerry asked.
“Yes,” Daniel answered.
“Isn’t that risky? They could move there and contest it. The bank does not like disputes like this. It could get messy,” Jerry said.
A savage grin split Daniel’s features, cruel anticipation glittering in his eyes like shards of obsidian.
“They won’t come,” Daniel‘ said. “They will think we are preoccupied.”
His smile sent shivers down Jerry’s smile.
“How are you sure?” Jerry asked.
“Have you heard of the head of the Dark Hands?” Daniel asked.
“The one that makes all the deals? But he is a fake. He is just the face of the organization,” Jerry said. “What does he have to do with anything? He is useless; we know that.” Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
“But they don’t know that we know that, do they?” Daniel asked, and Jerry paused.
“What are you planning to do with a fake leader?” Jerry asked suspiciously.
Even though he was a fake leader, many did not know this. If they had not been suspicious hout why they would want Anya and researched the fake head, they too would have also thought he was the real deal.
This is because even as a fake leader of the Dark Hands, he was very well protected, as though he were the real thing.
Jerry had a bad feeling about Daniel’s smile.
“Well, we are going to abduct him,” Daniel said with a grin, and Jerry’s face fell.
Jerry was livid when he heard Daniel say this. He felt his head hurt.
“Abduct him?” Jerry asked.
“Why not? Since he is used to distract people from the real leader, he should be put to good

use. We need them thinking we think we have the real leader,” Daniel said.
‘Still, Daniel. Fake or not, the leader of the Dark Hands is not easy to abduct; talk more find. How will you find him? Angelo City is big, and we don’t know where he is,” Jerry said.
To this, Daniel smiled and sent out a short text. It read, Where is the fake leader right now? I
need his location.
Soon a reply entered, and Daniel smiled.
“We do now,” he said to Jerry, shaking his phone at him.
“Now what?” Jerry asked.
“Well, he will come to us,” Daniel said.
Down at the Angelo City docks, the salty breeze carried the pungent scent of fish and fuel as Matthew Reeds stepped out of his black SUV.
He straightened his designer suit, eyes scanning the dimly lit docks. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the stacked shipping containers.
