MISTAKE 62
Chapter 62: Daniel plays dirty
Just as Daniel was about to delve into his overflowing inbox, his phone buzzed insistently. Glancing at the caller ID, he saw it was Neil. With a furrowed brow, Daniel answered the call.
“Neil, what’s the urgency?” Daniel inquired, his voice laced with a chill. Every time Neil called, he knew it had something to do with Anya.
“Daniel, we have a problem,” Nell descended on his cars. “There’s talk online about escalating the smear campaign against Anya.”
Daniel’s heart sink at the news. “What’s the plan?” he asked, his tone sharp.
“They’re planning to release more damaging content,” Neil replied grimly. “It is as though they want to press her further. It doesn’t make any sense; what do they want to get by pressing some more?”
“This may have more to do than Anya, or there is something they want from Anya that even she does not know,” Daniel said.
“I found something that could be related to that,” Neil said.
“What?”
“The painting you acquired before, Anya in the wind, there is a lot of charter about it,” Neil
answered.
“That shouldn’t be odd; I heard that it is quite the famous painting.” Daniel did not seem to see the point.
“This painting has passed hands many times, even with a few governments trying to buy it

but being outbid by private buyers. It has been stolen quite a few times and shown up on the black market for ten times the price,” Neil explained.
“That is too odd for a normal painting,” he frowned. He knew that Anya said this painting had
sentimental value. But he doubted that it had much to do with the plot against hing had
“True. There are quite a lot of myths about this painting. People are claiming it is a map to some treasures, some to gold, and the most resentful, to hidden military weapons,” Neil
continued.
“That is absurd,” he said.
“It is odd, right? Those who believe in this art are so paranoid; how do you think it ended up in a small auction somewhere? I checked the price you bought it at; it was at least ten times
lower than it’s current market value,” Neil said.
“You are saying someone wanted me to buy it?” Daniel asked.
“Better, someone wanted your wife to buy it, but you won instead. I have checked; recently people believe that the painting should return to the original owner. Some man was caught off the coast of Hawaii. He claimed to be the original person who stole the painting. He said that he took it off an old man a long time ago.” Neil explained.
“He is the one who started the rumor. He does not even recall what he had heard the old man
say the painting led to. No one knows why the rumor. fermented this long. There are those who have spent their lives deciphering this. According to what I heard, people have found very random
things following this painting. A lot of those things were significant enough to make people believe that there was really something about it.”
“So, it all leads to my wife, then,” Daniel muttered. “Send me all the information on this painting that you have.” Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
“What will you do?”

“I will send it to my father,”
hiel answered. “As for this internet nonsense, enough is
enough. Release the video from that day,” he instructed.
“I understand, Daniel. How big do you want to make it?” Neil asked.
“The bigger the better.”
After ending the call, Daniel wasted no time. He swiftly dialed the number for Ethan, the head of public relations, to summon him to his office.
Moments later, Ethan strode in, a sense of purpose evident in his stride. “You wanted to see me, sir?”
“We’re about to release the video of Anya defending herself,” he informed Ethan. “I need you to ensure it receives maximum exposure.
“I see, I will get to that immediately,” he answered with a slightly confused look.
“But that’s not all,” Daniel continued. “We’re also going to release copies of the documents Stanley was attempting to coerce Anya into signing. Make it big. I will send you some documents. It contains the relationship between the parties involved, including Anya’s lawyer.”
“Sure.” Ethan had been following this matter at Daniel’s request. He also knew that the person in question being insulted online is his ex–wife. He was curious as to why Daniel was dealing with her issue, but he held his tongue.
The day proceeded as planned. In between his responsibilities, Daniel received constant reports on the situation concerning Anya online. When he saw that he was getting the effect he wanted, he decided to finish work early to go and comfort Anya.
As he made his way to the elevator, his mind buzzed with thoughts of Anya. She has been all he could think about for more than a month now. He knew that she was vulnerable right now, so it was easier for him to get closer to her. He could not waste this opportunity. The doors. slid open with a soft chime, and he stepped inside, pressing the button for the parking lot.
The descent felt interminable, each floor passing by in slow motion as Daniel’s thoughts drifted back to Anya. He was too much in a hurry to return home.
Finally, the elevator came to a stop, and the doors slid open to reveal the dimly lit parking lot. Daniel stepped out, his footsteps echoing against the concrete floor as he made his way to his
car.
But before he could reach it, he spotted Selene standing by his vehicle, her silhouette
illuminated by the faint glow of the overhead lights, causing him to frown deeply at the sight of her.
Selene turned to face him, her expression a mixture of determination and defiance. “Daniel,” she greeted him coolly, her voice cutting through the silence of the underground parking lot.
Daniel’s cold eyes swept over her with disinterest “Selene,” he replied and continued walking towards his car when she stopped him.
Selene’s lips curled into a soft smile as she took a step closer, her eyes gleaming gently. “I saw the video, Daniel,” she said, her voice dripping with honey. “I know about Anya.”
Daniel raised a brow at her words, unsure of where she was going with this.
“She’s remarried, isn’t she?” Selene continued; her words passed through him like a punch hitting cotton: “I came because I was worried. Don’t you think it is too unfair to you, still clinging to the past?”
Daniel raised a brow at her words, his patience wearing thin. “Leave, Selene,” he commanded, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re blocking the way to my car.

But Selene didn’t move. Instead, she took a step closer, her gaze burning into his with ant intensity that made his skin crawl.
“She has already married someone, Daniel,” she whispered, her voice laced with desperation. ” And he must be rich, too. I always thought she was a bit of a gold digger. See how quick she was when finding another rich man.”
“Be careful with your words, Selene,” his chill words rang through the parking lot. “I do not have a lot of patience; move!”
“Are you still clinging to her? Why? What am I, then? I have been by your side this long, waiting for her to leave.” Great seemed to have lost her mind as she basically screamed at him, “When you were married to her, you would not even look my way; now she is gone; even married to someone
else, you still won’t look my way? What does she have that I do not? Why keep looking at that slut when you could have me instead?”
Daniel recoiled at the suggestion, his anger flaring. “You? Have you looked in the mirror? It can’t be because your family has been calling you a princess so long; you actually think you are one,” he spat, his words sharp with disdain, his eyes narrowing darkly. “Who gave you the confidence that I would like you? Can you be more shameless? Do not test me. How dare a loose woman like you who purs
