Chapter 19: A spy
Bonnie stood still for what seemed like moments after. She felt cold all of a sudden and she was just too weak to stand.
The night seemed longer. A maid brought her dinner but she couldn’t find Elixir anywhere.
No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t find Gwen. She didn’t even know where she was supposed to look and how long she was supposed to look.Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
The only person she suspected was Philip but she was going to the city soon and wouldn’t even be able to investigate him. The thought of it caused headaches throughout the night.
She wondered also if her parents had survived.
She closed her eyes eventually but when she reopened them, it was already seven in the morning. It actually looked like she didn’t get a wink of sleep the night before.
She turned on the bed, just as a knock sounded on the door.
“Yes, come in,” she said and the door opened. A new face walked in with a tray of food.
She bowed and placed it on the dresser. She stepped back and waited for orders from her.
Bonnie regarded her for a while. She wasn’t at all familiar to her, “What’s your name?”
“Mercury,” her soft voice said and bowed her head the most.
Bonnie stared at the tray, then she remembered her parents. She looked up at Mercury again, “What_,” she stopped quickly as she remembered she wasn’t supposed to let anyone know she wasn’t Gwen, “You can leave, she said instead.”
Bonnie stood from the bed. She took a step but fell back quickly. Just before she could collide with the floor, she found soft arms holding her back.
She looked up at Mercury and remembered Xavier. It was wrong to think about him but Bonnie couldn’t even help it.
Xavier was her mate after all.
Mercury carefully steadied her on the ground. “Are you alright?”
Bonnie nodded, unable to speak. Her throat felt patchy and sour. She took another step towards the bathroom. Her steps felt like she was walking on knives but that was actually what was happening to her.
Mercury stood behind her and helped her into the bathroom. The bath cubicle was absent so she took a shower and returned to the bed.
Mercury got her a red dress which she slipped on before she returned to sleep on the bed.
Mercury regarded her for a moment. “Aren’t you going to eat?”
Bonnie’s eyes were closed. “I’m not hungry. Take it away or eat it.”
” But, you weren’t even able to eat during your heat. It will be best if you regain your strength soon. And well, the Alpha wouldn’t like it.”
Bonnie took in another harsh breath. She remembered the deal she made with Xavier. She was supposed to act like everything was normal or it might cost her parents’ life.
Just how was she going to find Gwen so she would be free again?
She sat up at once when the door creaked open.
Mercury hurried to take the tray. She placed it before her on the bed as Xavier walked inside the room, his sharp gaze drilling holes everywhere.
“Is there anything else you might like?”
“No, you can leave,” Bonnie muttered, with head bowed towards the food. She tried her best to eat the pancakes but they wouldn’t even pass through her throat. It felt painful pushing them down forcefully.
“Leave us!” Xavier’s deep voice made Bonnie quiver.
There was a soft slam of the door and Bonnie knew she was alone with the Alpha. The room had suddenly grown smaller. With Xavier’s presence, everything seemed to quiver in fear.
Maybe it was because he was the Alpha. Or it was because he was her mate, she really couldn’t tell.
“Rowan is leaving tomorrow morning and you are looking this dead?” His voice was raised above normal, the intensity making her shiver.
“I’m sorry. I will be fine by tomorrow,” she mumbled without looking up. She must avoid his gaze at all cost.
He moved to the window as usual. It was as if something was interesting him outside the window. He was always watching whenever he pulled the curtain aside.
“This window actually shows me everything that enters the palace,” he started after some minutes of silence. ” I’m always looking for my mate. I’m expecting her to come in at any moment and if that happens, you will have to excuse us,” he stressed deliberately. Though, Bonnie didn’t understand why he would do such a thing.
Unless he knew that she was his mate. Well, there was no way he wouldn’t feel the mate bond. Or maybe not! Bonnie couldn’t really tell.
“And,” he finally turned to Bonnie again. “if that doesn’t happen in a week’s time. Then, I will have no choice but to prepare for war. I’m going to kill your parents, then you. Then, you will know how much I’m not scared of war.”
Bonnie swallowed harder on the lump that had suddenly formed in her throat. She heard anyways of his nightly.
Xavier wasn’t the type to fail at war. He was a man of valiant and valor. He would surely win the war, she was sure of it.
“May I ask you a question?” She said softly but still didn’t look up. Xavier didn’t answer but she continued anyway. “Do you truly trust the men in your court? Do you truly trust the people you called yours? How did you know one hasn’t betrayed you?”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Bonnie looked up and met his gaze. ” It means you have the wrong person. The person that kidnapped Gwen is part of the court.”
” Are you trying to talk your way out of this?” He smirked. ” That wouldn’t work. Just try to talk your father into revealing the truth about where my mate is.”
Bonnie looked away. ” How am I supposed to speak with him when I’m not even allowed to see him? He doesn’t even know I’m alive.”
Xavier zoomed before her. ” Are you trying to play me?” He screamed, annoyed.
Bonnie shuddered uncontrollably. “I don’t know what you are trying to say,” she stammered.
Xavier felt a surge of anger. He held her by the neck and his nails ducked deep into her fresh. “Are you fucking trying to play me!”
He watched Bonnie fight for air and eventually let her go.
He regarded her for a moment. “just speak with your father! Well, he wouldn’t be surprised on seeing you since he’s already aware that you are his Bonnie.”
Bonnie’s eyes went wide with shock. The first thing her mind went to was how he knew. She remembered that it was only her and Elixir that went to the dungeon that day.
How the fuck then did the Alpha know about it?
Xavier smirked again. “Surprise? Do you sincerely think you are safe in the palace?” He turned around and walked out.
Bonnie touched her hurting neck as the marks healed up. Her mind went to Elixir instantly.
It seemed to her like Elixir had betrayed her.
