Ill mannered

“Ahhh!” I screamed when I found Zane Carrington outside my door. He was leaning on the opposite wall just staring at the door. Quickly composing myself, I faced the CEO while Harry opened the door.
“Good evening, sir.” I said.
Saying he did not look pleased is an understatement. The man looked like he wanted to whip us both. I hoped he would not think we had been doing something other than work back in there.
“Mr. Smith,” he addressed Harry, I ignoring me like I was not even there. “What are you doing here?”
Fxck respect. If this man wasn’t going to show me simple respect by acknowledging my greeting, I was not going to respect him. I knew his type, jerks who think they’re God’s gift to women. Just because I greeted didn’t mean I was interested in him.
I glanced at Harry and felt like kissing him in front of that jerk just to prove a point but I remembered that I needed a job so just decided to walk away. He didn’t say anything, and I didn’t know why that annoyed me. Why did I want that jerk’s attention?
In the evening as I prepared my supper, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the weird events of that day. From that boy who had taken a photo with me, the moment I shared with Harry and then the worst part of my day, getting snubbed by the CEO. Sh! t. Did he know that I had a secret job? Was that why he was there and acted like that?
I placed the knife on the table and poured the chopped eggplants off the chopping board into a plastic dish. Next were tomatoes which weren’t ripe enough. I liked them that way. I was about to chop one into two when I heard the sound of my ringtone. Singing along to it, I headed to the living area.
“Hello,” I said after swiping the relevant icon. Grabbing the remote, I muted the television. The volume was low but this could be important. The line was quiet for a few seconds before I heard a deep voice speak. It sounded like it was normally not deep but the owner was making it seem so. “Check your messages.”
“Wha-” I stopped because of the beep that signaled an ended call. I opened the messages app and saw a multimedia message. There was a photo of me standing in front of the class at St. Felicity’s. The shock made me feel like all the energy I possessed has been sucked out of me. The phone slipped through my fingers and I slumped onto the couch. No. I couldn’t lose my job when my career was just kicking off. If I got fired, I’d not be able to get a good letter of recommendation so it’d be very hard to find another job.
I dialed the number that just called but it had been switched off. I didn’t think I’d be able to cook anymore so I stood up weakly and walked, almost lifelessly into the kitchen and turned off the gas stove. Rummaging in my snacks cabinet, I removed two bags of potato chips and took them with me to the couch. My bladder was complaining but I could not be bothered to do anything about it. I decided to lie down facing the ceiling then bended my knees. That way I wouldn’t feel the fullness of my bladder. It always works.
Who could’ve done this to me? First suspect was Kim. I didn’t understand why she hated me from the day we met when I had not done anything to her. Was that she was jealous of my position? Now she probably thought I got paid even at St. Felicity’s. That was if she was the one who took that photo.
Maybe Sara? Sara was the Financial Manager and she had hated me since I accidentally spilled hot coffee on her. Although she and I did not get along, I did not think she would go as far as having me followed. She didn’t usually mind other people’s businesses as long as they stayed out of her way.
What about Harry? He had been curious about my movements lately and Kim said he disappeared on the previous Wednesday when I left. Though he didn’t leave that time, I wondered whether he hired someone to follow me. My relationship with him was quite bumpy at the start and with time we started being nice to each other. Now that I thought about it, he was the one that reached out to me. What if it was a plan to get to know my weaknesses?
I barely got any sleep that night as I kept thinking, tossing and turning. I had to rub my eyes for them to work in the morning. It felt like someone put sand in them.
Kim was at her work desk when I got to the office. For the first time, she had arrived before me.
“Morning,” she said with a smile too wide it was suspicious.
“Follow me,” I said, feeling certain that she was behind everything.Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
“What’s it, boss?” She said, crossing her arms in my office. I hated being called boss because it sounded like I was a head of a drug cartel or something. I ignored it because there are more important things to talk about.
“What are you up to?”
“I came to work just like you,”
“Listen here, you ill-mannered thing, I don’t want to play games with you.” Placing my bag on the table, I sat on the chair.
“Same. Can I get back to work now?”
“Yes,” I waited for her to close my door before breaking down into tears. If it was her, I had a feeling she would succeed. It seemed like she was the kind of person who would not give up until she was successful in getting what she wanted. I hated feeling out of control. I needed to fire that woman before things got out of hand.
