Chapter 667
Chapter 667:
She had assumed that he would relocate her to an area much closer to the guarded secrets. But to her surprise, Jareth directly guided her to the second basement level. The level of confidentiality here was much higher.
This floor was a stark contrast to the one above. The security measures were far more stringent, and the air was heavy with an unspoken tension. Unlike the first basement, where the researchers still gossiped and showed hints of fear, the staff here were like soulless machines — focused, efficient, and utterly devoid of emotion.
Allison scanned the scene, taking in the thrumming activity around her. People bustled past, eyes glued to documents and moving like robots. It was as though they were operating on an invisible script. Not a single one acknowledged her — she was a stranger after all.
“The second basement is a bit different from the first one,” Jareth said as he guided her along the second basement level. “It’s a sprawling lab where each researcher has their own designated area, so it doesn’t need as much cleaning.”
Allison nodded, processing the unusual setup.
“Just stick to your spot, Alice. If you come across any stray papers, run them through the shredder,” he added with a faint smile.
Did a cleaner really have their own station?
Just as she was starting to get puzzled, Jareth led her to the innermost area on the second basement level. Behind a thick glass partition, Allison spotted Verruckt, hunched over his desk in focused silence.
His silver hair caught the sterile light, framing his blank, unreadable expression — yet everything about him radiated a kind of eerie authority that made her shiver.
Jareth paused and turned to her. “Alice, do you have any other questions?”
“No, I’m all set,” Allison replied, glancing around and taking in the strange scene: human organs suspended in jars, fragments of bodies, things that belonged in nightmares more than a lab. Her gaze snagged on a large glass container, where a human leg floated, preserved in formaldehyde.
The sight clawed up her spine, forcing a swallow. “Thanks for the opportunity,” she managed, forcing a smile. “I appreciate the chance you and the boss have given me.”
“Work hard,” Jareth replied with a dark glint in his eye, “and you might move up the ladder one day.”
He gestured toward the glass cases that lined the walls. “This is a government-sanctioned research facility. The human remains here are all voluntarily donated. Perfectly legal, remember that.” It was a legal institution on the surface, but everyone knew what it actually was.
Allison offered a brisk nod. “Of course.”
As Jareth walked away, Allison waited until he was out of sight before slipping her hand beneath a table, carefully tucking Rowan’s fingerprint tape into the hidden pocket of her uniform. She exhaled, her eyes scanning the lab once more. The equipment, the eerie silence — it was all a front. The so-called “medical research” here was a twisted pursuit of human enhancement, a reckless dive into genetic tampering, muscle augmentation, and rumors of experiments on immortality.
