Chapter 90
Nesta’s POV
Maria arrived early, as she always did, to help me get dressed for the day. I had already been awake for some time, standing in the bathroom and gazing at my baby bump in the mirror.
Despite all the chaos currently going on in my life, couldn’t help but smile as I gently ran my hands over the curve of my stomach. Who would have thought? Not me certainly.
This baby, growing inside me, was a source of joy and hope, a reminder that life continued even amidst the turmoil. That I have a chance with a baby of my own. My flesh and blood.
“Good morning, my lady,” Maria greeted me with her usual warmth as she entered the room.
I turned to her, returning the smile she always wore, though mine was tinged with a mix of emotions. My morning wasn’t good and I know why, I shouldn’t have bothered but even my wolf is not happy
“Good morning, Maria,” I replied. She immediately set to work, preparing my outfit for the day.
Maria helped me into a light, flowing dress that accommodated my growing belly, I couldn’t shake the worry gnawing at the back of my mind.
The baby, this precious life inside me, was a constant source of both excitement and anxiety. I couldn’t wait to give birth and hold my child, to see their tiny faces and feel their small hands.
But then again, I didn’t want to give birth here in the palace. The fear of what might happen if the baby looked like Nolan or Rowan haunted me. They have very similar features and are different from mine and Luca’s.
Luca has blonde hair and blue eyes just like me though different shades so if the baby looks like me, they’d think he also looks like Luca but what if the baby has dark hair? I’d be damned.
They would know right away, and the delicate balance of my situation would be shattered, I don’t want it shattered. I don’t want to be living with fear of my own feelings. Never.
Maria, sensing my distraction, paused and looked at me with concern. “Is everything alright, my lady?”
I forced a reassuring smile. “Yes, Maria, everything is fine. Just… a lot on my mind.”
She nodded understandingly and continued her work, her hands deft and gentle as she smoothed the fabric of my dress. I took a deep breath, trying to push away the worries.
Today, I needed to focus on the present and what lay ahead. I glanced once more at my reflection. My baby bump was prominent, a visible sign of the life I was carrying.
Despite everything, I felt a surge of protectiveness and love for this child. No matter what happened, I would do everything in my power to keep them safe.
Maria’s gaze flickered to the bed as another maid entered the room to change the sheets. The maid. worked efficiently, pulling off the linens and replacing them with fresh ones.
I could see the question forming in Maria’s eyes, and I blushed, knowing exactly what she was thinking. She knew what had happened in my room this time around. Not Nolan’s.
“Is everything alright, my lady?” Maria asked again, her tone gentle but curious.
1 averted my eyes, feeling the heat in my cheeks. “Yes, Maria. Everything is fine.”
She gave me a knowing smile, then hesitated before speaking again. “I heard that the alpha Prince Nolan has left the kingdom for some work.”
My heart sank at her words. Nolan had left? Why didn’t he tell me? A rush of emotions surged within me, conflicting feelings of hurt and confusion. So many other emotions I don’t know.
I tried to mask my reaction, but I could feel the turmoil bubbling under the surface. I hate what I am feeling but can’t help it.
“Did he say when he might return?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
Maria shook her head. “No, my lady. He did not. It seems it was a sudden departure.”
I nodded, struggling to process this new information. Why didn’t he tell me? I had thought that, despite everything, we had some understanding, some connection.
But now, with him gone without a word, it felt like another layer of uncertainty had been added to my already chaotic life. This is him setting another boundary that I am not important in his life.
Noted.
“Thank you, Maria,” I managed to say, forcing a smile. “I suppose he has his reasons.”
She gave me a sympathetic look, her eyes soft with understanding. “Of course, my lady. If you need anything, please let me know.”
As she finished with my dress and stepped back, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness and frustration. Emotions again, I thought bitterly. This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
Always these damned emotions. I had promised myself not to get too attached, not to let my heart get involved. But Nolan had a way of breaking down those walls, of making me feel things I didn’t want to feel.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. Today, I would focus on other things, on the baby, on my art, on anything that could keep my mind from spiralling into the mess of emotions Nolan had left in his wake.
As I made my way downstairs for breakfast, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked bread filled the air, momentarily lifting my spirits.
The dining hall was bustling with activity, maids and staff preparing for the morning meal. I was about to step into the room when I heard raised voices.
Nora’s voice, sharp and biting, carried through the hallway. “How many times do I have to tell you? This isn’t how I like my tea!” she scolded a maid who stood trembling, her eyes downcast and shoulders hunched in fear.
I paused at the entrance, watching the scene unfold. Just as I was about to step in and say something, Nora’s eyes flicked up and locked onto mine.
Her expression shifted instantly, the anger dissipating as if it had never been there. She looked away quickly, a flush creeping up her neck.
Without a word, she turned on her heel and disappeared down the corridor, leaving the poor maid looking bewildered. Yeah, I feel the same too little maid.
I walked into the dining hall, my mind buzzing with questions.
Why had Nora stopped so abruptly? Did I look like a ghost without knowing it? Was there something about my presence that had silenced her?
The maid Nora had been scolding was still standing there, looking shaken. I gave her a reassuring smile. “Are you alright?”
She nodded quickly, her eyes wide. “Yes, my lady. Thank you.”
I sighed, feeling the weight of the morning settle heavily on my shoulders. It seemed that the palace was full of secrets and unspoken tensions, and I was right in the middle of it all.
I sat down to eat but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more going on than I understood, and it gnawed at me, adding another layer of unease to my already complicated life.
