Chapter 286
Although Wendy did not finish her sentence, Charles still knew what she was trying to say. She was worried that this would be their last chance Charles could see his grandmother.
After all, Charles' grandmother, Charlotte, was already eighty years old, and it was hard to tell if she would even survive such a major operation.
Charles returned to his room. "Don't worry, Mom. I'll be back soon. Grandma will be okay!"
"You are right, Charles. Grandma will be fine."
Charles got off the phone and booked the earliest flight he could get to San Angelino. He quickly left after grabbing just his essentials: his ID, wallet, passport, and some important documents. He would return to San Angelino just to see his grandmother; if she were fine, he would return the next morning.
If she did not make it... he would tell Naomi of the situation the next morning.
Charles left the hotel and hailed a taxi to the airport. "Driver, to the airport, and make it as fast as you can, please."
"Yes, sir."Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
The driver stepped on the gas and sped onto the freeway.
Charles watched the hotel disappear in the rearview mirror and took out his phone. He wanted to send Naomi a message to tell her that he needed to step away for a bit.
However, after some hesitation, he put down his phone again.
He would tell her once he arrived in San Angelino.
He turned to gaze out the window at the passing city lights. He clenched his fist as a solemn look crossed his face.
Meanwhile, Naomi returned to her room and texted Charles as soon as she settled in.
His reply came quickly.
[Charles: Get some rest. Call me if you need anything, and if I don't pick up, just message me.]
Naomi replied yes, then quickly put
down her phone, oblivious to any change in Charles' tone. She went into the closet to hang up all her new clothes. As she was doing so, she felt a twinge of pain in her ankle.
She hung up her clothes, then sat down in the chair and checked her ankle.
Her ankle was a little swollen. Perhaps she had gotten hurt again. from her encounter with Olivia that afternoon. Although she had tried her best to protect her foot, Olivia's had come so suddenly that Naomi did not manage to avoid it in time. Since she had just recovered, it would not be surprising if she
accidentally suffered another injury.
Naomi got up and tried to put her weight on her other foot, then hobbled over to her first-aid kit.
The doctor had given her a special medicine that she was supposed to spray onto her ankle that could aid her recovery. She had been using it diligently over the past few days but had yet to finish it. She sprayed it onto her ankle in hopes it would help her feel better.
She then massaged the ointment onto her ankle and checked it once more. Hopefully, it would not get worse, or else she would not even be able to go to work the next day. Naomi frowned at the thought of this. She had just recovered, and she did not want to be stuck in a wheelchair any longer.
All of a sudden, her phone buzzed. Naomi glanced out the door. Who was calling her at this hour?
Naomi put her stuff back into the first-aid kit before hobbling slowly out of the door.
Her phone was on the coffee table, buzzing. A familiar name blinked on the screen.
Amelia.
Naomi picked up the phone and glanced at the time. It was already close to 11 p.m. Amelia rarely ever called her at a time like this. Had something gone wrong? Naomi picked up. "Hi, Amelia."
