Chapter 1
The sound of the blaring alarm jolts Evelyn Jones out of her deep slumber, and she groans angrily, pulling the duvet over her face. It’s Monday today, and she needs to go to work, just like every other workday. Just how much she so loves weekend and everything that accompanies it. For heaven’s sake, can’t she have a good sleep even for once? It’s so annoying how she always has to wake up early and get ready for work. Maybe quitting the job would be a nice idea, but who wants to die of boredom at home? Definitely not her. She’s never going to allow that.
Yanking the duvet off her face, she reaches out lazily for the alarm that wouldn’t stop blaring, throwing it across the room and shutting it off. With all the strength left in her, she pulls herself up to sit on the bed and stretches her arms above her head tiredly.
Dragging herself from the bed, she walks sluggishly into the bathroom and slams the door angrily behind her like she wants to rip it off. Crashing against the wall as soon as she steps into the bathroom, and ruffles her hair and sleepily.
Although she has been working for three years or even more, she’s still not used to waking up early. Crazy, right? Maybe she wouldn’t have thought of working if her parents cares about her. Yes, she’s the only child of her wealthy parents who supposed to get all the love and attention, being the only child, but she’s rather ignored by her parents, as the only thing they care about is their business.
Although she was hurt about how they treated her, but as she grew up, she learned to accept her fate and live with it.
Stepping into the bathtub, she soaks herself under the warm soapy water and scrubs her body slowly.
A few minutes later…
The cold that suddenly penetrates her body makes her snap her eyes open with full force, and a gasp escapes her lips. She had fallen asleep in the bathtub without knowing it.
“Shit!” She curses under her breath, as she quickly steps out of the bathtub and hurries to wash the water off her body, walking into her room afterward.
It’s already past 8am, which means that she’s an hour late already.
“Damn! I’m so screwed up,” She mutters as she finds her way to her closet, throwing them open hurriedly. A new CEO was said to be taking over the company where she works, today, and getting on a bad page with him on the first day is the last thing she wants. He was rumored to be arrogant and strict. Yes, she may be stubborn and can be annoying, but creating a bad impression of herself before her new boss at the first meeting? That is a horrible thing she would never want to happen.RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
After getting dressed she grabs her handbag from the bed, and storms out of her room not after picking up her car keys from the bed.
Her name is Evelyn Jones, twenty-three years old young lady living off her family’s wealth, and catering for herself, regardless of her parent’s wealth. For someone who doesn’t look like she’s existing to her parents who reside in Paris and care only about their business, Evelyn has learned to live by herself even at this very young age. She grew up with her nanny instead, since she has been the one taking care of her all these years.
At times she would feel like she was adopted by these people, because why would they not care about her if they’re really her parents?
It’s her third year, working as an accountant in Turner’s enterprise, one of the biggest telecommunication companies in Oklahoma City. She has a boyfriend, Raymond Jared, a young business tycoon who loves traveling around the world and spending more time on his business, instead on her. But she still loves him, regardless.
Descending the grand staircase, the aroma coming from the kitchen fills her nostrils, and she smiles widely. The thought of having breakfast before she leaves the house makes her happy, but she’s damn late for work.
“Good morning, nanny Cleo,” She greets her nanny who’s busy in the kitchen, making breakfast.
“Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?” Madam Cleo glances at her and asks with a smile on her face.
“Yes, I did. What are we having for breakfast, please?” She leans against the counter, forgetting that she’s already late for work.
“I packed some food for you. You’re already late for work, so you should take it with you,” madam Cleo says to her, as she reaches out for the food flask that is next to her on the counter. She hands it to her.
“Awww! Thank you. You’re always the best,” she squeaks excitedly, and madam Cleo rolls her eyes at her.
“Alright, see you later. I need to run along now,” And with that, she strides out of the kitchen and heads straight to the parking lot where her car is parked. She hops in her car and drives out of the house afterward.
The drive to the company wasn’t supposed to take much time, but the horrible traffic jam had her stuck here for the past ten minutes, and there was no hope of getting out of this shit anytime soon. It’s annoying. What the hell are those people doing there that the cars are stuck in this hellish traffic? She was already late, and here she was, thinking she would be in his office in less than fifteen minutes, but he’s now stuck in a traffic jam.
“Can you do something about this, huh?” She sticks her neck out of the car and presses the honk loudly.
The car next to her suddenly whines down the window glass, revealing a young man sitting in the driver’s seat.
“Hey, miss can you please keep it down, huh? Don’t blow off my eardrums, please,” He snaps at her, forcing scoffs off her throat. She was already pissed off, why the heck is he adding to it? He should’ve just minded his business, right?
“Damn you, man! You have no right whatsoever to tell me that. So go to hell,” She yells at him and presses the honk again.
“Can you move your cars out of the damn way? I’m running late for work!” She sticks out her neck through the window again and yells while they all stare at her from their cars like she’s acting a drama. Not that she cares though.
The traffic jam was finally resolved after a few minutes, and everyone drive their cars away. A few minutes later, she finally drives into the company and parks neatly in the garage. She’s so damn late.
Stepping into the large office, her eyes almost pop out of their sockets as she’s welcomed by a weird sight. Her colleagues are all looking different, especially the ladies. They are all dressed nicely, smell nice, and have weird makeup on their faces. Ok, what’s the celebration today?
Letting out a scoff, she shakes her head, walking over to her seat.
“Good morning, Eve,” Marian, one of her colleagues greets her with a smile on her face. Marian is the only close person Evelyn has in the company. Marian would sometimes go over to her place to keep her company, and whenever she feel bored at home, she do go over to her house for a visit too.
“Hey Marian, how’re you doing?” She smiles as she turns to face Marian, but she cringes dramatically when she sees weird makeup on her face too. She’s getting curious and more confused. What’s going on?
“What’s the celebration today? I mean, you all are wearing some weird makeup, and some nice clothes too. What’s going on?” She pouts her lips, as she whines at Marian.
“Oh please, Eve. Don’t tell me you don’t know what’s going on here?” Marian gives her an ‘are you serious’ look.
For heaven’s sake, if she know what is going on, she wouldn’t be asking her this. Still, she shakes her head.
“The CEO is said to have willed the company to his son, and he is coming over to the company today. Like every other person, I want to look good. Who knows, he may just notice me, and make me his Cinderella,” Marian cups her cheeks dreamily while smiling like the fool she is.
What the heck is this world turning into? Just when she thought she had seen it all, then new madness keeps surfacing.
“Oh, I see,” She shakes her head unbelievably, turning to her desktop…
