Chapter 1698
"Why don't you stay home and take care of Charlie? With you watching over him, I'd feel completely at ease. Besides, I'm earning enough money now. You don't need to worry. I can more than provide for the both of you," Ben said, his tone gentle but firm. The Lucas Corporation was massive, and Ben's past work as a lawyer brought in astronomical fees, starting in the millions. Financial security was never a concern for their family.
Jamie shook her head. "The work I've done before was all over the place, but didn't you support me in doing it? What's this sudden change, Ben? You're switching sides faster than flipping a page!"
Her decision to return to studying law had been encouraged by Ben himself. But now, hearing him say this, it felt like he was wavering, as though he wanted her to stay at home.
Stay at home and do what?
Take care of the child?
To Jamie, this was an opportunity she couldn't let slip away. It was her chance to prove herself.
"That's not what I meant," Ben said softly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "I just see you running yourself ragged, and it makes my heart ache. Jamie, I love you so much. I can't bear to see you worn out."
His gaze was full of warmth, his words gentle.
How could Jamie not understand what he meant?
The real issue was that, after all the effort she had put in, this was her chance to shine. She needed to prove herself to show everyone she could stand alongside Ben as an equal, just as accomplished and remarkable as he was.
"Alright, alright, I won't say anything more about it," Ben relented, trying to lighten the mood. "How about this-get some rest tonight and go back to work tomorrow. Is there anything you're craving? I can order food for you or get you some bubble tea." Ben was spoiling her like a child, eager to accommodate her every whim. If Jamie wanted something, he'd buy it without hesitation, always prioritizing her comfort.
Jamie knew this well.
But tonight, her mind wasn't on food or rest. She was still strategizing her approach to the meeting with Lila.
Ben picked up on her distracted expression almost immediately. "You're not yourself. Did something happen?"
"It's nothing," Jamie replied casually. "I just have to meet with a potential partner later tonight."
She didn't tell Ben that the partner in question was Lila.
But Ben wasn't so easily fooled.
His expression darkened. "Who exactly are you meeting? Is this about the law firm? Jamie, why aren't you being honest with me? Tell me who is it?"
A hint of insecurity crept into his voice.
Jamie had been a top student in her law program and was well-known for her beauty and intellect. She had plenty of admirers back then. Now that Jamie was reclaiming her confidence, how could Ben not feel a twinge of unease?
Seeing how serious he was, Jamie decided not to keep it from him any longer. She smiled faintly. "I didn't,
expect my meeting tonight to benet
with Lila. But this collaboration is important. If I can secure it, I'll have no trouble establishing myself in the industry."
"You don't need to land her partnership to establish yourself With me backing you, no one in the industry would dare cross you. Is meone trying to give you @hard time when I'm not around?
Ben's expression turned severe, his protective instincts on full display.
Jamie quickly reassured him. "No one would dare say anything disrespectful to me these days."noveldrama
