Chapter 98
Chapter 98
The creaking of the ancient four–poster bed seemed to whisper secrets in the night.
Gwendolyn wrung her hands with nervousness. “Maybe, maybe I should just bunk with Grandma tonight.”
It had been her initial decision to keep from disturbing Nicolette’s sleep.
Beneath the quilt, a warm, strong hand seized hers.
“You can’t sleep with your grandmother every night, right? She might get suspicious.” They were husband and wife, after all. It wasn’t right to be sleeping apart all the time.
“So, I’ll… stay here then, Gwendolyn resigned.
Lying side by side with rigid bodies and shallow breaths, they desperately tried to lull themselves into sleep. But the night only seemed to heighten their awareness, and a subtle tension grew between them.
“Meow…”
“Meow, meow.”
A stray cat’s call was persistent, long, and melodious outside the window.
It was spring, and the cats were in heat.
The first cat’s calls had been on before another joined in. The two strays under the window were like warring sprites, their cries growing increasingly indecorous.
The stillness of the night made the cats‘ “meow–meow” all the more distinct.
Gwendolyn’s cheeks blazed with embarrassment, and finally, she couldn’t take it anymore. Propping herself up in her arms, she declared, “I’m going to shoo away those darn cats.”
He reached out and grabbed her, his voice rough and unsteady. “Gwendolyn.”
Maybe it was the small box hidden under the pillow or the cats in heat, but his thoughts. were far from pure.
Those restless, eager thoughts surged uncontrollably.
“Mr. Chadwick, what’s… what’s wrong?” Gwendolyn’s voice trembled as she instinctively licked her lips. His hand was so hot.
Slivers of moonlight slipped through the window, allowing Howard to see her lovely face and trembling lashes.
“Mr. Chadwick, does the remedy make you unwell? Or did Mr. Thomas give you something?” Gwendolyn’s voice tightened with concern.
Was there a problem with the little thing that had fallen from his clothes?
Howard’s grip tightened as he said with restraint. There’s something wrong with me.
His eyes were deep, profound. He watched her in silence until her heartbeat quickened. This content provided by N(o)velDrama].[Org.
Gwendolyn’s breathing became erratic.
“Mr. Chadwick, I… I could check your pulse to see if you’re feeling…”
Howard’s voice was even hoarser. “Gwendolyn, I’m no saint. I can’t be free from desires.”
“I… I understand. Mr. Chadwick. You’re craving something. Then, let me help you.”
Gwendolyn leaned in closer, clumsily mimicking what he had once done, pressing her lips to his in a tentative kiss. Her initiative jolted his nerves.
Howard lay still, eyes closed in intense restraint, his breathing heavily, almost like a groan. His long fingers clutched the bedsheets so tightly that they turned white. He was at the breaking point!
He knew he couldn’t let things spiral out of control!
“Gwendolyn, stop,” he said breathlessly, “Leave for a moment. Give me some time.”
“Okay.”
Gwendolyn inhaled deeply. Her skin flushed as if she were a boiled lobster. She rose from the bed, gave him one last look, and quietly walked to the door, closing it gently behind
her.
Leaning against the cold wall outside, she smacked her forehead in frustration. She puzzled over why she had impulsively done such a shameful thing.
She had been so presumptuous.
Howard didn’t need her to satisfy his cravings! How mortifying.
Gwendolyn stood at the door, motionless for a long time.
Even the cats outside had left, but inside, the bed continued to creak and groan through the night.
