Marrying my high school bully

Thrills of revenge

Lorraine

The path I was headed to was lonely. Not just lonely but scary as well.

It gave me the creeps, but I dared not take a backward glance because of the thick darkness lurking behind me.

‘What was I doing here?’ I thought aloud and fear coursed through my body as I got a response in the form of an echo.

“My child,” came the shrill voice my brain refused to acknowledge as I wrapped my arms around myself, hoping that my scaredy mind was cooking up voices.

But the voice came again, stronger than the first and I was forced to halt my steps. Summoning courage, I turned around and a woman dressed in immaculate white which had a golden glow smiled at me.

Her smile was warm and kind, and her eyes were filled with sympathy and an endearing kind of love that only one person could give me.

My mother, I realised, was standing here with me.

My heart skipped a beat as I took a step backwards in fear. “W-Who are you?” Terror was evident in my shaky voice.

Her smile didn’t falter, instead it became brighter. “You know who I am, my child.” She advanced towards me slowly but I didn’t move because I couldn’t.

It felt like my feet were stuck to the ground with a strong glue, ensuring that I wouldn’t run away. “Mother?” I called gently and she stretched her arms, then the invisible glue that held my feet bound to the ground loosened.

I ran towards her and melted into her embrace, burying my face on the crook of her neck. After everything I’d been through, it felt good to be with a familiar person, especially the woman that I’ve missed for a long time.

“I missed you, mama,” I sobbed loudly without holding back my emotions.

Her fingers trailed through my head, her touch soothing to my headache. “I missed you too. I’m so sorry for failing you.” Her voice crack unmistakably.

I pulled away and held her hands. “You didn’t fail me, mama. You only fell in love with the wrong person, that’s what happened.” I countered.

She palmed my face, wiping my tears. “Leonardo was a sweet man when we met. If I’d known that he harbored so much evil in his heart, and he was after my money then I’d never have married him. He thinks that he has won, but you will go back to the world and take your revenge.” Her lips were pressed with determination.

My eyes widened with a startling discovery as I passed a cursory glance around the lonely dark place.

Was I actually dead?

Like my mother knew what I was thinking about, she nodded.

“Your body is presently lying lifeless in the hospital bed and they are about to take you to the morgue but I won’t allow it, that’s why I’m sending you back. Everything they took from you, you will take double without mercy and anything you need to show them pain will be available for you.”

I was utterly speechless as I listened to her instructions, but I couldn’t ignore the flames of revenge that she ignited in my heart with her words.

Leonardo, Emilia, Liam and Blake. I’d hurt them so much they wouldn’t know what hit them.

“Are you ready to go back?” She asked firmly and I swallowed.

Having made my decision with our eyes locked, I agreed. “Yes, mama. I promise I’ll avenge your death. They won’t go unpunished.”

Even without being told, I knew that something within me had changed. I hugged her again, knowing that we didn’t have much time together again.

Gradually, I felt her skin becoming flurry. Her fingers were turning to white dust and I saw myself being pushed farther away from her. Was this how our discussion was supposed to end?

I tried to run after her but instead of going forward, my body retreated backwards and began to float, my name resonating in the darkness.

The voice sounded strong and filled with terror-motivated enthusiasm that could be likened to a man’s.

“For God’s sake, wake up, please!” The intensity of his desperation dragged me away from unconsciousness as my eyes opened to the brightness of the room.

My throat closed up when I tried to swallow, but that wasn’t all because I realised that I couldn’t even move. Then my mind flashed back to the dream I had, or whatever it was.

Mother said I’d died and she’d send me back.

Was this what she was talking about?

I was interrupted from my train of thoughts with screams of joy. I frowned as my eyes flew towards Mr Rogers who was jubilating with the other doctors and nurses.

“She’s alive!”

My lips formed a small smile as I took note of the room. Painted in white, it reminded me of the time I met Dexter after the accident. Shivers surged through my spine as I sighed. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.

Mr Rogers ran towards me, stroking his fingers fondly on my cheek. His gesture drew out strange feelings within me that had nothing to do with romance. There was this fatherly bond I felt whenever he was around me.

For some unknown reasons, I knew that I was safe around him and he wouldn’t hurt me.

“I thought… I thought I’d lost you.” He burst into tears and I almost did the same.

What amused me was how he took my concerns personally, like I was his child. “How did you get to find me?” I managed to ask, ignoring the ache coming from my dry throat.

He shook his head and held my hand. “I’ll tell you all about it, but not yet. You have to rest and regain your strength.” He said, his expression revealing relief and peace.

My mind reverted to what my mother had said. She told me that people would be available to aid my plan. Was she referring to him as well?

A fine young doctor came to him and they chatted a bit. His face was filled with smiles and gladness as they conversed while I turned to the side.

I didn’t know the extent of my accident but I was sure that it was very bad, but why didn’t I feel any blinding pain when I turned to my side?

The conversation between Mr Rogers and the doctor ended and he returned to me, looking ecstatic. “There’s good news.” He announced.

I gave him a side glance, encouraging him to go ahead.

“The doctor is surprised at the speed of your recovery because you’ve been out for a month and you weren’t responding to treatment until this afternoon, but the shocking part is that after the tests, your body healed miraculously.”

I smirked, knowing how it happened. Mother had a hand in my speedy recovery but I couldn’t let him know.

The thrills of revenge simmered in my innards and I was so ready to dish it out.
