Old feelings

Staring at those beautiful gray eyes ignited a deep feeling that I’d buried for a long time. She reminded me of the woman I loathed so much.
My late wife, Lorraine.
Her alluring lips that revealed her feisty side snapped shut when Emilia barged in. I quickly hid my displeasure in her intrusion seeing that my beautiful daughter was around. She was the only reason I wouldn’t lash out at Emilia.
My eyes darted to miss Rogers who seemed to be awestruck on seeing me with a child. I wasn’t sure, but it felt like the sight broke her heart and the urge to go after her when she stormed out of the office overwhelmed me.
Emilia placed her palm on my chest, reminding me of her presence while I shoved it off. “Why are you staring at her like that? All your attention should be on me and your child.” She pouted.
I ignored her and planted kisses all over Lilly’s body. Due to how busy I was, I couldn’t visit her frequently, but I made sure that they were properly taken care of, especially my daughter.
“I’m giving my attention to the person that really deserves it so stop whining unnecessarily.” I scolded her and carried Lilly to my couch.
She began to play with her teddy and I left her to it, satisfied with how engrossed she was with her toys. Then I faced her mother squarely, who had plopped down on my chair.
“You shouldn’t have brought her here without calling me,”
She raised a brow and rolled her eyes nonchalantly. “I can bring her to meet her daddy whenever she wants to see you, besides, you’ve been distant these days. She couldn’t stop crying when I picked her up from school because she said she missed you.” Her lashes were lowered while she talked and I didn’t need any soothsayer to tell me that she was lying through her teeth.
I propped my arms against my waist, slightly frustrated. “Lilly, here, doesn’t look like someone who has been crying, Emilia. What if I was in the middle of an important meeting? I’m sure my secretary told you.” I seethed, wondering why I was getting really riled up.
It wasn’t the first time she brought Lilly over, but being with that hot model whom I’d do anything to make sure works with my company, did something to my brain.
Her eyes kept reminding me of Lorraine, and the more annoying part was that I was still in love with Lorraine. Even though she killed my sister and I filed a lawsuit against her, I still wanted to look her in the eyes and ask why she did it.
But I guessed she never really loved me, if not she wouldn’t have absconded so easily. The reminder hurt me badly, and having to see a woman with almost the same kind of eyes worsened the pain.
Emilia sprang to her feet. “What’s wrong if the secretary tried to stop me but I ignored her because my hunch was right?” She fired back.
I scoffed angrily, glaring hard at her. “What hunch?”
“I knew that you were with another woman and I was right about it.” She banged her fist on the table and Lilly let out a shriek.
We both rushed towards her but I was quick to carry her and pat her at the back. “I hope you learn to keep your voice down when you’re with my daughter.” I growled and kept patting her back until she became lax in my arms.
That was one thing I loved about Lilly. She relaxed easily whenever I was with her, and I reveled in the fact that staying in my arms could make her calm.
After Lorraine jilted me and ran away, I lost all hope. My sister was dead, I had no friends and the woman I loved with all my heart cut my heart into pieces without batting an eyelid.
Loneliness became my companion, and my life had no meaning any more until Emilia came one evening and announced that she was pregnant.
At first, I thought she was joking until she showed me the test results. I couldn’t deny being the father because we had a one night stand once which I regretted badly. But every action had a consequence and I wouldn’t be a man who ran away from his responsibility.
And having Lilly in my life was the best thing that happened to me.
I lived for her.
Each time the pain from the past reared its ugly head, I held onto the fact that I had a daughter who would want me to play with her whenever I visited, or buy her favorite strawberry ice cream.
But seeing that beautiful woman with captivating gray eyes made me feel like I could have more.
Just maybe.
After I placed Lilly on the couch and covered her up, I returned to my desk and opened my laptop. There was a lot of work to be done and I couldn’t keep bickering like a jobless person.
As I stared at the computer, my mind reverted to the discussion I had with Miss Feisty and I chuckled.
She was witty and smart, but she also had an intimidating aura that could make anyone do her will. Although something told me that she wasn’t the kind of woman who’d oppress others just for her comfort.
“You’re smiling so hard, Dexter. What has that woman done to you?” She flared up and when I met her gaze, I saw the desperation in her eyes. “Have you forgotten what Lorraine did-”
I raised my hand sharply and she clamped her mouth shut immediately. “Do not mention that name in front of me again.” I warned and she swallowed visibly. “The only reason we are having this conversation is because of Lilly, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know your place.” I warned her, my tone growing cold.
Her eyes sparked with anger. “And what’s my place?” She asked through gritted teeth.
“It’s not hard to know. You are just my baby’s mother.” I forced out.
